ABOUT THE TEAM
We're looking for people who are passionate about crafting phenomenal web applications.
As a Frontend Engineer you’ll use your extensive knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to improve the Slack web client, a complex in-browser application relied upon by millions of users every day. You will work with real-time data streams, engineer for performance across browsers, and delight people by making the best software we can imagine. You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, Application Engineering, and QA to spec, conceptualize, build, test and deploy new features for our large (and growing!) user base.
You'll also play a critical role in a specialized group of engineers focused on advancing Slack's audio and video capabilities, particularly within Huddles and Clips. This role will focus on WebRTC and A/V technologies, while still significantly overlapping with traditional frontend engineering work. This dual focus aims to blend cutting-edge A/V related features with our robust, user-centric frontend architecture, ensuring seamless integration and an exceptional user experience. Join us to push the boundaries of A/V communication and help redefine remote collaboration in a digital-first workplace.
What you will be doing - Collaborate with Product Managers and Designers to conceptualize, iterate on, and release new features within Slack's digital communication platforms, specifically focusing on Huddles and Clips
- Debug and enhance audio and video performance across different network conditions and devices, using a deep understanding of WebRTC, network protocols, and browser capabilities.
- Proactively identify and address performance bottlenecks in real-time communication features, including React/Redux performance issues
- Author code that sets the standard for quality and velocity for their team and frequently establishes patterns that other teams can effectively contribute to
- Help our skilled support team triage bugs and troubleshoot production issues, and build better systems for monitoring performance and quality in A/V related features
- Mentor other engineers and deeply review code
What you should have
- 4+ years of experience writing client-side JavaScript and React Framework
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in developing real-time video conferencing features using WebRTC
- Strong practical knowledge of WebRTC, with a proven ability to use advanced third-party libraries (e.g. AWS Chime, Twilio, Jitsi, Mediasoup and/or similar SDKs or frameworks). Candidates should be adept at leveraging these tools based on a deep understanding of the underlying technologies and concepts
- Strong understanding of network and security protocols relevant to A/V streaming and data transmission in WebRTC
- Proven experience in troubleshooting and resolving complex A/V quality issues in web applications, including familiarity with Electron and various web clients
- Proficiency in React and Redux, with a track record of optimizing front-end performance within these frameworks
- Expertise in building complex layouts with CSS and HTML
- Strong UX and design sensibilities, and a desire to sweat the small stuff
- Strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and empathy
- Self-awareness and a desire to continually improve
Bonus Points
- Deep experience with Electron applications, optimizing cross-platform A/V quality and performance
- Prior involvement in open-source projects or general purpose SDKs related to WebRTC or real-time communication technologies.
- Knowledge of audio and/or video codecs and experience working with asynchronous A/V products, such as audio or video recordings
- Experience creating or working with test frameworks for realtime communication and/or A/V products
