Position  

The Senior Manager, Mental Health will be a full-time employee of U.S. Soccer to lead, direct and provide mental health, care, education and resources in support of the federation, athletes and staff. This professional will be a key leader in developing and delivering messaging, programs and resources as well as support in moments of crisis the needs of mental health across the sport. Additionally, this role will build and foster key partnerships across the mental health platform, with key national stakeholders who support our mission and are pivotal for sustained programming. The Senior Manager, Mental Health will take the lead on guiding and delivery of lead sports mental research, publications, and academic scholarship in collaboration with the Director of Research & Innovation. This role will create key policies on mental health screening, tool kits for staff and players, as well as provide interventions and guidance for crisis and escalating matters as needed. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop a strategic plan with department objectives for mental health delivery 
  • In collaboration with the Head of High Performance and Chief Medical Officer, collaborate on in-and-out of camp programming to players and staff 
  • Be a key clinical provider as part of the overall medical team in support of mental health matters on individual and or group circumstances
  • Develop and support research projects by ask, within the (Sports Science, Sports Medicine and Sporting Analytics) departments
  • Be a key stakeholder in building enhanced federation wide mental health education, awareness, resources and programming
  • Support our National Teams by traveling into camps as per annual scheduling
  • Research and provide guidance on innovative tools, programs and or resources that can be of support to the mission 
  • Collaborate with key National stakeholders in the mental health space
  • Participate in webinars, conferences as scheduled
  • Develop and deliver educational programming directed to the targeted audience as collectively agreed upon
  • Support the “Mental toughness’ and performance optimization of the athlete 
  • Lead the U.S. Soccer mental health task force in scheduled meetings and build upon and enhance existing programs. 
  • Lead in implementing the clinical pathways for mental health assessment, referrals, treatments/interventions, and management and will serve as a case manager for mental health referrals.
  • Direct providers in the management of mental health crises and in the execution of mental health emergency action plans for U.S. Soccer nationally and internationally. 
  • Maintain current licensure/certification within the Mental Health Field
  • Provide treatment that spans the spectrum of psychological care for athletes, focusing primarily on mental health concerns but may include optimization of performance when necessary. 

Requirements

Minimum Qualification

  • Master's degree or PhD in clinical Psychology or equivalent
  • General knowledge of soccer and or elite athletes and sport
  • Capable of working in fast-paced and demanding environments 
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in clinical sports psychology
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal people skills
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work and execute under pressure and deadlines 
  • High professional acumen 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication combined with a professional demeanor with excellent capacity and understanding to write scientific papers 
  • Able and willing to travel up to 40-50 days of the year
  • Able and willing to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends as needed

  • Thorough institutional knowledge of U.S. Soccer’s mission, goals, technical plan, policies, practices, and procedures 
  • Previous experience/work with elite and youth athletes
