The Patrol Sergeant oversees day-today operations/activities and supervises patrol officers that assist to provide police, safety, and physical security services to the Georgetown University Law Center and community in general. They ensure compliance with appropriate written and verbal orders of the Director/designee for all security, police, and safety and traffic matters occurring on and around Law Center property. The incumbent works with other Patrol Sergeants and acts as a frontline supervisor for subordinate officers and civilians {student guards and contact security guards}. The incumbent is critical in emergency management and law enforcement operations as errors can lead to the loss of life and loss of property. Ineffective public safety at the University can have a severe impact on the reputation of the University. Reporting to the Director of DPS/designee and working independently with limited supervision, additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct and deploy the work activities of subordinate employees assigned and consult with the Director/designee on appropriate personnel decisions.
  • Serve as initial Incident Commander on-scene during incidents and emergencies unless relieved by a ranking officer.
  • Send emergency notifications to the University Community during critical events as approved by Director/designee, ensuring administrative support processes for DPS are accurately completed/maintained (for example, crime logs, activity sheets, daily rosters, time and attendance).
  • Display knowledge of an extensive array of leadership competencies that are beyond the scope/requirements of subordinate officers, such as, conducting investigations of personnel performance, evaluating campus safety programs, analyzing training needs, enacting problem-solving techniques, and applying outstanding judgment to unusual events/incidents.
  • Engage in community policing and crime prevention activities and may be assigned special projects/assignments.
  • Perform routine desk/office and police duties, spending significant time spent outside and walking with regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts such as noise, high temperatures, and adverse weather conditions.
  • As a responder to incidents, may entail proximity to danger including acts of violence, fire, fumes, odors, toxins, and protests with agility/dexterity (stair climbing, running, bending, kneeling, and crawling) and strength to pursue, apprehend, and detain uncooperative persons.




Work Interactions


The Patrol Sergeant is an integral part of Georgetown Law Department of Public Safety. As a visible representative of public safety, the performance of the incumbent reflects positively or negatively on DPS/University. As a liaison to various constituencies (students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, visitors, neighbors) and external agencies (MPD, DCFD, FBI, USSS), the Incumbent will routinely interact with these constituencies in a professional manner. Interacts routinely In a structured/formal or unstructured/emergency setting for example non-routine contacts, contacts as part of a presentation, and contacts with violators/victims. They conveys information in a clear, concise, and logical manner.



Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Higher Education, Administration, Public Administration, or related field, preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years law enforcement experience related to public safety, security related, law enforcement, military and/or equivalent supervisory experience with knowledge of criminal/civil law and police policies and procedures; Must include 3 years of supervisory experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or security related, law enforcement, or military work experience; and/or security-related, law enforcement or military training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen and be able to lift up to 100 lbs when required
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three years and able to pass Georgetown University driver's certification
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Special Police Officer Commission and any other security related security clearances and pass a detailed background Investigation
  • Must possess the ability to obtain and maintain certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and QC-based Aerosol Subject Restraint and other assigned training subjects
  • Training may Include successful completion of the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy, usually during the probation period or equivalent training and certification from a civilian or military law enforcement academy as required by the Director; In cases where the candidate has previously graduated from a recognized police academy, the Director may request an academy waiver with documentation
  • Possess tact, patience, a courteous demeanor and pleasant personality in order to interact with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members
  • Experience in and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures; Experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation), biased based policing and ethics



Must be able to successfully complete all other departmental trainings to include:

  • Crisis De-Escalation Train-the- Trainer or equivalent
  • Field Training & Evaluation Program or equivalent
  • Basic Instructor Training Program or equivalent
  • First line Supervisor Training or equivalent
  • Instructor and Lesson Plan Development Training Program or equivalent




Technical Qualifications and Specialized Certifications

  • Advanced knowledge of criminal/civil law and police policies and procedures
  • Direct fiscal responsibility and/or indirect fiduciary responsibility for property and equipment
  • Advanced knowledge of emergency management (mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery)
  • Advanced knowledge of policing in a higher education environment and applicable laws/policies/procedures/reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex functions, establish priorities, and resolve issues
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, and implement programs/projects




Preferred Requirements and Qualifications

  • Ability to supervise, evaluate, manage, and motivate subordinate police personnel
  • Tact and courteous demeanor when interacting with Law Center community and all citizens
  • Prioritizing tasks and remaining focused when performing multiple tasks
  • Displays discretion, professionalism, and de-escalation use of police powers in a University environment
  • Oral and writing skills are essential
  • Displays the willingness and initiative to support subordinates and organizational goals in difficult work situations, does not evade responsibility, and follows up on assignments



All applicants are subject to a drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, extensive psychological testing, and physical fitness/agility test as required by the Director. 20/20 vision or corrective lens (including contact lens) to see far and near objects, estimate distance, and distinguish colors is preferable. Knowledge of telecommunications equipment is preferable along with administrative and clerical skills. A written test and/or a writing sample may be required by the Director. Excellent grammar, speaking, and writing skills.

This position is considered as essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore Is subject to be on call when necessary. Must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to DPS needs. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered in lieu of above requirements by the DPS Director.



Pay Range:


The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$22.88 - $42.10


Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
