Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Develop and recommend long and short-range work plans and prepare work orders and plans that meet the ultimate system requirements. Provide new customers with appropriate services and upgrade services to existing customers in an efficient and economic manner. Design lines in accordance with federal standards and specifications to ensure safe and reliable service to customers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Mentor and assist in training Engineering Assistants. (Position has no authority in tangible employment actions including hiring, firing, promoting, reassigning significantly different tasks, or causing changes to benefits but may be involved in directing day-to-day operations of employees).
  • Prioritize work assignments and assist in coordination and implementation of construction and new services by communicating with the customer, Service, and Construction departments.
  • Design, survey, stake distribution power lines for creation of construction plans using NISC, ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCAD, IKE, and PLS-CADD including materials lists and cost estimates for single-phase, three-phase, residential and small commercial customers. Assign proper work order numbers in NISC Financials.
  • Operate electronic survey equipment and related computer software to prepare plans for construction and mapping.
  • Review and ensure compliance with national and local safety codes.
  • Determine and secure rights-of-way and serve as notarizing agent for new and upgraded construction for private and commercial property owners.
  • Survey and make physical and visual inspections of facilities for defects, proper clearance and pole separation, and potential safety hazards.
  • Review and determine line relocation and costs for various projects within rules and regulations.
  • Prepare contracts and documentation for new and upgraded customer services.
  • Reconcile customer complaints by serving as an advocate or mediator concerning issues related to customer's services or rights-of-way.
  • Determine and specify transformer and conductor sizes from load information provided by customers.
  • Formulate plans and prepare applications for crossing transmission power lines, railroads, and other utility rights-of-way.
  • Research property deeds by searching through governmental records for the purpose of finding BrightRidge rights-of-way.
  • Act as a guide for contract crews during outage restoration.
  • Evaluate major storm damage and provide information and materials needed for restoration.
  • Generate power line profiles using survey equipment and PLS-CADD profiling software.
  • Ability to maintain reliable, predictable, and reasonable attendance.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist control room operators, Service, and Construction departments during outage restoration.
  • Must maintain a valid drivers' license from state of residence.
  • Maintain any vehicle assigned to them.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
  • Must be available for afterhours work which would include working fair share of all necessary overtime.
  • Represent BrightRidge in court, if needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have knowledge of electrical power line specifications.
  • Must have knowledge of system's service area, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret property plats and construction drawings such as state road plans.
  • Must be able to operate electronic survey equipment.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations needed for power line design, profiles, guying strengths, sagging charts, etc.
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Windows and Microsoft Office and be able to operate and enter engineering data using PC workstations and tablets .
  • Must have a working knowledge of the power system including line routes, road locations, terrain and meter types.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the power system and construction practices in order to evaluate major storm damage and provide information for outage restoration.
  • Must be knowledgeable and able to use ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCad, IKE, PLS-Cadd, and NISC systems software.
  • Must have working knowledge of power line construction materials and assemblies.
  • Must have working knowledge of governmental records to obtain legal documents on property ownership and existing rights-of-way.
  • Must have good communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position requires constant handling, balancing, vision, talking, hearing, depth perception and arm/hand use for machine control operation. Requires frequent carrying, forward bending, standing, sitting, reaching fine manipulation and simple grasp. Must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Outside in varying weather conditions approximately 60%-70% of the time while ambulating up and down uneven terrain. The remainder of the time the work is performed in an indoor climate-controlled office environment with appropriate lighting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree in surveying, engineering or technical field required.
  • Four years' prior experience as an Engineering Assistant or similar work experience desired.
  • Additional training in distribution line design and construction from an approved institution is required.
