Miami County Circuit Court is hiring a Full Time Bailiff / Float position.


Position: Jury Bailiff / Float

Department: Circuit Court

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM M-F

Incumbent serves as Jury Bailiff/Floater for the Miami County Circuit Court System, responsible for overseeing all aspects of the jury process and courtroom proceedings.


DUTIES
:


Manages all aspects of jury trials, including selection process for prospective jurors, preparing and mailing letters and questionnaires, maintaining lists, typing and recording documents, arranging for meals and transportation, security, welfare and safety of all jurors, and preparing jury venire, jury summons for submission to Judge and opposing council.


Creates appropriate paperwork for each jury trial, including, but not limited to, seating charts, challenge sheets, and updated juror lists.


Calculates expenses and travel reimbursement for jurors and prepares vouchers as requested by jurors or employers.


Prepares and submits reports, including Court revenue, and budget and expenditures.


Serves as a liaison between jurors, attorneys, general public and the court.


Checks defendants in for initial hearings, providing rights forms and charging information to defendants.


Manages calendar for Circuit Court and Judge, including checking CCS for updates or special requests.


Prepares statistical reports, reviewing pending cases, preparing notices of dismissal for cases as directed by Judge, and making entries for dismissal.


Assists with oversight of proceedings supplemental hearings.

Assists with maintenance of legal library, including receiving, cataloging, shelving, and updating manuals, journals and books.


Maintains employee time system.


Prepares protective and no contact orders, and Abstracts of Judgment for criminal defendants.


Performs duties of Court Reporter and/or Administrator as needed.


Assists in preparing orders and transcribing as needed.


Performs related duties as assigned.


I.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK :


High school diploma or HSE required. Prior legal experience in court or law office preferred.


Must be at least 18 years of age.


Thorough knowledge of legal terminology and Miami County court system policies and practices as prescribed in the Local Rules.


Thorough knowledge of all court proceedings, with ability to properly record proceedings.


Working knowledge of standard policies and practices of the judicial office, with ability to effectively apply appropriate procedures to regular and recurring duties.


Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare detailed written reports and legal documents as required.


Ability to type with speed and accuracy and properly operate standard office equipment, such as computer, calculator, fax machine, scanner, telephone, copier, and courtroom recording equipment.


Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, attorneys, government agencies, law enforcement agencies, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.


Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to State requirements.


Shall comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.


Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate or hostile persons.


Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions, coordinate information, make determinations, and present findings in oral or written form.


Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences between data, people, or things, apply knowledge of people and locations, and plan and layout assigned work projects.


Ability to reconcile quarterly and annual statistics, and make simple arithmetic calculations.


Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, amidst frequent distractions and interruptions, and work on several tasks at once often under time pressure.


Ability to be cross-trained to perform duties of Department staff.


Ability to work evenings, and/or extended hours as needed.

    :


Incumbent performs duties according to a flexible, customary routine, with priorities determined by service needs of the public. Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures, with incumbent referring to supervisor for unusual matters, such as policy interpretations. Decisions are always determined by specific instructions or existing, well-established policies and procedures. Errors in work are primarily detected or prevented through supervisory review or notification from other departments, agencies or the public. Undetected errors could result in a loss of time to correct error and/or inconvenience to other agencies or public.


  • PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS
    :


Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, attorneys, government agencies, law enforcement agencies, and the public for purposes of giving and receiving information, and rendering service.


Incumbent reports directly to Circuit Court Judge.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT :


Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment and in a courtroom, involving sitting/walking at will, standing/sitting for long periods, keyboarding, reaching, bending, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, lifting/carrying objects weighing under 25 pounds, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objects. Incumbent maintains considerable contact with the public and may be exposed to hostile or argumentative individuals.


Incumbent is required to work evenings, and/or extended hours as needed..
